Does this sound familiar?

Today I was struggling to get my child to start school work. I realized that he was anxious about all the work which had to be done, so I had to think out of the box.

I used sticky bookmarkers (paper stickies) at the top of the page to indicate what had to be done. Once he was finished he could remove the sticky and place it at the bottom of the page to show the work is done!! After completing the work, we counted how many sticky papers he had. The incentive ........ he can have that many extra minutes during break time, or he can have that many extra minutes screen time this afternoon. Yes, I know screen time is not good, but this is my leverage at the moment, and it is working without a fight.

The visual system gives the brain an idea of order. Without knowing what is expected, the brain feels confused. A visual layout or visual idea helps the brain to determine what to expect and the order in which to perform the task.

The work we have to do

Work we completed

This was easier than I thought. We got through the work and had extra time to play!!

I will post more visual ideas this week which has helped me and my little one to keep the motivation, to keep the pace of work and to give him some order during the school morning.
